WG3 - Using a Computing Ontology for Educational Purposes
Work has progressed in developing a comprehensive ontology of all the computing and information related disciplines. This ontology is a valuable tool for classification of computing research and for supporting development of computing curricula. This working group will expand the input to the project and specifically develop connections between learning outcomes and concepts encoded in the ontology.
A general ontology has many potential uses. The focus of this working group will be on its most effective use in the connection of learning outcomes to particular computing topics. The particular computing area of focus will be decided based on the membership of the working group. The group will select a course or curriculum area, gather existing learning outcomes related to that area, and use the computing ontology to identify concepts most directly related to the target curriculum area. In addition to connecting specific learning outcomes with regions in the computing ontology, the working group will establish guidelines for others to follow in mapping additional outcomes to other topic areas. Thus, although the specific computing area to be addressed will be determined only after the group membership is established, the nature of the work is well defined: The group will develop a methodology for connecting learning outcomes to particular regions in an ontology that describes the entirety of the computing disciplines.
