WG1 - Debugging Assistance for Novices: A Video Repository
CS educators with experience teaching CS1/2 and an interest in promoting effective debugging skills among first year computing students are encouraged to participate in the creation of a set of web-based debugging tutorials. These tutorials will combine video clips and step-by-step written instructions to assist students in debugging common novice programming errors. Specifically, this group will:
- Identify and report key debugging skills and processes that first year computing students should develop.
- Create a web-based set of debugging tutorials which can be used by students in a variety of settings.
- Explore a pair-programming approach to authoring reusable learning objects (i.e., the debugging tutorials).
- Develop preliminary on-line assessment materials such as student surveys and usage metrics to assess the impact of these tutorial materials.
Visit the project web site (http://www.cs.ucsd.edu/~bsimon/ITICSE07) for additional information about this effort. A modest amount of preparation (reading, teleconferencing, etc.) is expected of participants.
