Tips and Techniques - information for presenters

Your Presentation

There is one Tips and Techniques session, scheduled for Wednesday 11:20 AM - 12:35 PM in the Balbeggie Room, where five presentations will take place.

Each presentation has a 15 minute slot, you should aim to speak for 5-7 minutes, allow 5-7 minutes for questions/discussion, allowing 1 or 2 minutes for the start and end swap over.

In preparing your presentation, remember that all delegates will have your final submission on the proceedings CD. Around 25% will also have a printed copy of the proceedings. Spoken presentations should present the content in a visual form, try to avoid slides full of text which the presenter just reads out. If you wish to demonstrate software or a web-based application, you should also prepare a "back up" - screen shots of what would have happened, in case of technical gliches. As your presentation time is short, it is often more efficient to use screen shots to illustrate key points, rather than a full demonstration. An alternative approach may be to use the audience as though they were your class and have them try out your suggestion, but only if time allows.

Finally, remember that we all come from different education systems and cultures, so explaining abbreviations and the context of your work is helpful. For example, explaining that K-12 in the US, and 5-14 in England are essentially the same, "faculty" is an individual in the US and a group of academic departments in the UK, etc.

Presentation Venue

The Balbeggie Room will be equipped with a data projector and a laptop loaded with Windows XP & Office 2003, plus also have the provision for USB, CD & DVD. There is also a microphone, a projection screen, wireless internet access on the podium computer and a facility for presenters to plug in their own laptop / MAC. Additionally, the Balbeggie Room will also have an overhead projector.

Please visit the Balbeggie Room beforehand to make ensure you are familiar with the layout and projection system. At the latest you should visit in the break immediately before your presentation to load up any files and test them, and also to meet with the session chair and other presenters.
