Dundee and the local area
Set in a dramatic location on Scotland 's east coast, Dundee is the fourth largest city in Scotland with a population of around 145,000. It is known as the City of Discovery: Captain Scott's ship "Discovery" was built in Dundee in 1901, and returned as a visitor attraction in 1986. The city is home to over 2000 scientists and researchers, and more than 20,000 students. The city also houses an internationally renowned Contemporary Arts Centre, and Scotland's only resident ensemble theatre company. In 2004, the City of Dundee was granted Fairtrade City status.
2007 marks the 40th anniversary of the University of Dundee, which was originally founded in 1881 as University College, Dundee, and spent 70 years as a college of the University of St Andrews. The conference will be based at the University's West Park Conference Centre, located in the leafy suburbs, and a pleasant stroll or bus ride into the city centre. Accommodation is available at the conference centre, or delegates can choose from a range of hotels nearby.
The historic county of Angus surrounds Dundee and provides a rich rural hinterland, including Glamis Castle, childhood home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, plus mountains, lochs and spectacular scenery. Crossing the River Tay to the south brings you to the Kingdom of Fife, with St Andrews, home of golf, and the colourful harbours of the East Neuk fishing villages.
